Hi, Friends! I haven't blogged in awhile. I made a change in grade levels from 1st to 3rd and that has taken up all of my time these last 2 years. Now that it's summer, I am excited to start sharing the awesome fun my teammate and I have been creating for our kiddos while they are learning. The first project I created after moving to 3rd was a 7 continents geography project. I knew our standard was to teach students to use political and physical maps, but that seemed so boring! I wanted to make something Arts and Project-Based to be fun, yet rigorous, and hit all the mapping and geography standards. They would create the continents out of salt dough!<br />
<br />
We started by reviewing how to read maps, use compasses and to tell the difference between physical and political maps. We also learned about landforms and practiced landform vocabulary. After a week of mapping and geography skills, students were split into groups and picked one of the 7 continents to research. I did not have anyone chose Antarctica as there aren't enough political or physical features for this project. I did model with Antarctica though, so they could learn about it.<br />
<br />
Now that they had their continent chosen, it was time to study the physical landforms and bodies of water that make up and surround their continent using many different maps as references.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBgqskWuk15fFun4Z04OjOvEKtMuQJ5WO0YudRfE-swIr6HNtOa0NgnaOo9TtAJe0X7Mscu5VfxoRGXP8fej02Xmz94SiE1HN0dJMMGwHd33e8gro8FNN0abEl_0A8Ywn8aeHaApipA9_c/s1600/physical+maps.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="330" data-original-width="525" height="125" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBgqskWuk15fFun4Z04OjOvEKtMuQJ5WO0YudRfE-swIr6HNtOa0NgnaOo9TtAJe0X7Mscu5VfxoRGXP8fej02Xmz94SiE1HN0dJMMGwHd33e8gro8FNN0abEl_0A8Ywn8aeHaApipA9_c/s200/physical+maps.PNG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
While students studied their physical maps, they created their own on a large 11 x 17 blackline as a group. This 2-D physical map becomes the "plan" for their 3-D model out of salt dough.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnIDJ9qRdd2oNJeabjahxyx6LWimJwQWfiyAYlb9b6Yt1ckEYl55Deevfbx2rwX6bi92vgfX11vojCQszkEm-wpoFDbFNxfUL2lk5uArpeX9HML2509fZ79Rqr5VcvM4OCpqKxOPEMomZk/s1600/physical+maps+blackline.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="294" data-original-width="371" height="158" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnIDJ9qRdd2oNJeabjahxyx6LWimJwQWfiyAYlb9b6Yt1ckEYl55Deevfbx2rwX6bi92vgfX11vojCQszkEm-wpoFDbFNxfUL2lk5uArpeX9HML2509fZ79Rqr5VcvM4OCpqKxOPEMomZk/s200/physical+maps+blackline.PNG" width="200" /></a></div>
After everyone completes their physical map, it's time to make SALT DOUGH continents. They are having so much fun they don't even realize they are continuously referring back to their map to create their continent!!<br />
<br />
You can see this group's 2-D physical map as they create their salt dough continent.<br />

<br />
Once the salt dough has dried, it's time to paint. Now we can tell what all of those landforms are!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
After the salt dough project, we are far from done. The group will now work together to make a large political map on another 11x17 blackline. Using the political maps I copied for them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwTiZvcDYZ9TkB4I2awmxqltsBGVwm9JgqncI9f7rp4RhDN9lrEOknorHph3uqzqi-xyWgIyVNO4yLpOr5FdiW6avvBn-z8X-JSfnsNBHfiqNZNOVgVb-dQpDE1ZpmAG4Q5Ry8wm_8k9G8/s1600/notetaking.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="296" data-original-width="355" height="166" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwTiZvcDYZ9TkB4I2awmxqltsBGVwm9JgqncI9f7rp4RhDN9lrEOknorHph3uqzqi-xyWgIyVNO4yLpOr5FdiW6avvBn-z8X-JSfnsNBHfiqNZNOVgVb-dQpDE1ZpmAG4Q5Ry8wm_8k9G8/s200/notetaking.PNG" width="200" /></a></div>
Each group has their physical and political maps done and now they are invested in their continent so it's a great time to integrate Language Arts with research and writing about one of the 7 continents. Each group has books on the continents and we use Epic books to take notes. The note page follows the same headings as in the Bobbie Kalman books on Epic. I also ordered some used versions to have since I'm not 1:1 computers.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAblzu6aTnJgfM1wC8t5-LGdKT1s07qL8krlpIMb2226IwCTuJs-r2g4mCPIKQMgi1AUH5_gCD7d9iJECVospBwE7ox0cd52ajDlWEhG32b2pRhleICKRX5NvdgiQ_7HIHzboDibn8yo8R/s1600/IMG_0123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="240" data-original-width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAblzu6aTnJgfM1wC8t5-LGdKT1s07qL8krlpIMb2226IwCTuJs-r2g4mCPIKQMgi1AUH5_gCD7d9iJECVospBwE7ox0cd52ajDlWEhG32b2pRhleICKRX5NvdgiQ_7HIHzboDibn8yo8R/s1600/IMG_0123.JPG" /></a><br />
Lastly, groups research, write paragraphs and then create a presentation to share their learning with the class.<br />

I used to use a clip chart but the clothespins were always breaking and it drove me nuts! So I made this rotation chart in Smart notebook. Students move counter clockwise around the chart. You might notice I added "Games" so I could incorporate literacy activities that matched our targets for the previous week as well as "Poetry". In poetry, students read and build poems that we have practiced in calendar. Students are find word patterns in the pocket chart and then they glue the poem into their poetry notebook and illustrate. After they finish those tasks, they love to create movements or dances to go with the poems. You'll see two girls working on movements to an Easter poem in the video. If they have taken time to rehearse, I'll let them perform in front of the class. They love it! <div>Comment below of you have any other questions about our Daily 5 (or would it be Daily 7?😉).<br><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb5myDU8IQLMfDhQi9uI8Nb9fG8Cp0Qg9gaTJippKbvb6E9Mv57Fe439IqTY7AZKmy9Jruq-plQsCUGQ0NLJ1hXsBJTghFl4qdzZLPWh9-vxemuS31NETJLqXFnmtAfJCZk_KBIueJuhYF/s1600/Easy%252520Blogger%252520Photo.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb5myDU8IQLMfDhQi9uI8Nb9fG8Cp0Qg9gaTJippKbvb6E9Mv57Fe439IqTY7AZKmy9Jruq-plQsCUGQ0NLJ1hXsBJTghFl4qdzZLPWh9-vxemuS31NETJLqXFnmtAfJCZk_KBIueJuhYF/s1600/Easy%252520Blogger%252520Photo.jpg" alt="Easy Blog Photo" class="alignright" width="512" height="384"></a><br> This is daily five where we work. this is how we get to be a better reader writer speller😃

As we studied different plants and animals, we added to our desert lap book. The kids loved making these books and begged to take them home when we were done.<br />

<br />
<br />
After we finished the lap books, I asked students to choose two animals. Their choices were:<br />
Javelina<br />
Coyote<br />
Kangaroo Rat<br />
Horned Lizard<br />
Gila Monster<br />
Elf Owl<br />
<br />
Once they chose their animals, I made them each a copy of the texts I wrote for each animal. They highlighted important information and found answers to text-based questions. After they researched both animals, I had them compare their two desert animals using a double bubble map. Pretty difficult stuff for them, but so many had great connections!<br />
<br />
Now that Jacob and the rest of the class have researched and compared their animals, I am going to make them choose one of their two animals and write an opinion about which animal they think is better, more interesting, etc. using reasons from their research!<br />

Post on Monday, April 6, 2015This is Adriana's post showing a song the first grade teachers and I wrote about volcanoes for our Earth Science show. <br />
This system works so well! Each group has a specific day of the week they are allowed to change books. While everyone else is reading to self, the group of the day is allowed to trade books in the library. The empty squares next to each group is where I write the level they can choose from. It's so simple. It takes a little bit of training, but then book trades run themselves.This leaves me open to conference with other students. Not sure if this is a mind blowing tip, but when I had teachers come observe last year, this is what they raved about so I thought I'd share the idea. :)<br />

Two posts in one week from me. I am on a roll! :)<br />
We start school in exactly two weeks! Yikes! Since we start on a Wednesday, I like to have the first 3 days filled with fun activities. Last year we changed our theme to bears and it was so fun! The kids loved the unit, so we are sticking with it!<br />
<br />
Here are some of the activities we used.<br />
First, I projected the Bears non-fiction reader and we read it as a class.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bear-y-Common-Core-An-ELA-and-Math-Unit-About-Bears-744468" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhTbrkPYwNazhNupw5UYHeO6gvj01NVVg6G-acBVu5K22v6kASMFY2To5ZSMj0l98gqq-omApemNcIXiIsHJT77HJhObtx7eFva4rh81T3sSBok4fKC0tfRo8EqZzhTjDyddhIXLi-F1up/s1600/Beary+Common+Core+preview.png" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
We read it one more time and had to decide on our favorite bear and why. I let students know they had to pick a bear from the text because of something they heard or saw in the text. In other words, "because it's soooo cute!" was not an acceptable answer. Then, the kids looked around the room to find the bear that was their favorite. They moved to the corner with their bear and when signaled they buddied up with a partner. When signaled again, they told their partner the reason they chose the bear.<br />
Last year, this was pretty much an experiment. Could first graders give a text based reason within the fort three days of school? And guess what? They could!<br />
<br />
Next, the students completed this opinion writing activity. Click the pic for this freebie!<br />

If you're thinking about trying this unit out but study bears later in the year. You're in luck! I just added 4 new student readers for each bear and a venn diagram for compare/contrast. It would be a perfect mini student directed research project. I have been MIA on this blog for quite awhile now, but <span style="font-size: large;">I'm back</span>!<br />
<br />
For some reason last year threw me for a loop. I started the year with thirty firsties and had to split my class up in January because we added a teacher. It was so hard! I really hope I don't ever have to do that again.<br />
<br />
I wanted to share something I worked on this summer after working on curriculum for my district in June. We started to design assessments for our Common Core Frameworks and are modeling them close to PARCC (a Common Core assessment consortium). We also reviewed and helped re-vamp the AZAC which is a Arizona reading comprehension test starting in 2nd grade. As a first grade teacher, reading the 2nd grade tests made me realize my students need to be exposed to these types of multiple choice text-based evidence questions in first grade. We can work through the questions together in whole group and small groups to better prepare them for 2nd grade when they need to be able to answer them independently.<br />
<br />
Sooo... this summer, I started writing original passages to use when teaching the RL and RI standards. I am so excited to use these. The hardest part about teaching Common Core for me is finding passages that fit my needs at the primary level. I use Read Works all the time but they don't have skill specific passages for Kinder or First Grade. These are going to save me so much time next year!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Read-Like-a-Detective-50-Passages-with-Text-Based-Evidence-Questions-1336684" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjyvQvMnaq42zX8bpK0O5ADIVA1tQAudX-xI1gTMwWNao2rPVDGmJosHHFJ_f0ergArL6yT8FBeaKMTR36NtPhmsWeW8bVmbCD0Cec4Rd3MvMoG_syH-NZVB9S_GOw0PmLhphwUyNofYeX/s1600/Slide3.PNG" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These 50 passages are bundled or you can buy them separately if you only want a specific standard. The standards addressed in these passages include: RL.2,RL.3,RI.2,RI.4,RI.8,RI.9.<br />

There's a freebie if you do!So... I'm sure I don't have any readers anymore because I never post but one of my many resolutions is to get back to blogging. I think it's just been a crazy year.
My teammate and I had 30 kiddos all semester and finally got word we were getting another teacher. We spent those last 5 crazy days with no prep because we had interviews for our new teammate. We found someone but now I'm just sad to lose some of my students.:( I know it will be better for all of us in the long run because I can't meet all the needs of that many students. The new teacher was supposed to start the Monday we go back but now they aren't sure when her paperwork will all clear. The students don't know and I'm not sure the best way to approach the issue with them. Does anyone have experience with this? What worked or didn't work well with your class?
Here's a simple freebie I created today to practice comparing sentences. I need to practice this skill before we really dig into data analysis and comparison word problems.
Just <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9MBso7d7m12TjBaM290MXo4eVU/edit?usp=sharing">click here</a> to grab a copy!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also, does anyone know why I can't make blogposts in "compose" anymore and only html? Please help! :)

My teammate and I always have a Pilgrim and Indian switch days where we each teach a different lesson about these historical groups. I always teach about Squanto and how he taught the pilgrims to plant corn. I read a story and then we make a tissue paper corn craft.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHIrIzhXDXzT4_7AMxioe5C6nKUWrStUW9Btq1XIbw23GcGIrfC6NKelGLC4C6B6Z_YosbmI-hRK08G9Xd2jNM9sUIuZ721_8gZIZvgRorf13k3q0T0dIkhNCmMzDhgDAwPQyyXbRNUbLr/s1600/corn+craft.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHIrIzhXDXzT4_7AMxioe5C6nKUWrStUW9Btq1XIbw23GcGIrfC6NKelGLC4C6B6Z_YosbmI-hRK08G9Xd2jNM9sUIuZ721_8gZIZvgRorf13k3q0T0dIkhNCmMzDhgDAwPQyyXbRNUbLr/s1600/corn+craft.jpg" /></a></div>
I wanted something more rigorous (buzz word!)so I created a paper for a how-to writing. The students can write the steps that Squanto taught to the Pilgrims.
I also made a fill in the blank version for Kindergarten.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Squanto-the-Pilgrims-Best-Friend-how-to-writing-982178" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmmjRMD71qYprptWdpSsqEZeFy_NYf5jTlNhdcIoxl0GzP7FgrRea3KPfnLp11Kj0-kFoPprYcBZaBgj0pNxWlf4ojXu2YeamLENRjGIGneXJWy9SlzlVL57N0HizH0CsMooP_wAJXFFIf/s320/Squanto.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I ran across this blog called the <a href="http://theteacherschatterbox.blogspot.com/2011/11/planting-corn-squantos-waywell-sort-of.html" target="_blank">Teacher's Chatterbox.</a><br />
She had the cutest idea to make a Squanto Corn Planting snack out of Oreos, Swedish Fish and Candy Corn.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiOV51JPN8k0BM1mHkzcg3bC3-xw7WLKayWhyykU-psqoOFObWZ2S4JIpwHmqB8M3R0WxUSNOVTiBFeFnl3oCXyby_54bxODlDTBIjbswqP6SdYBdTkpCIqDS2Tbn8Z3E9OqJB-bnrAS7E/s1600/squanto+snack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiOV51JPN8k0BM1mHkzcg3bC3-xw7WLKayWhyykU-psqoOFObWZ2S4JIpwHmqB8M3R0WxUSNOVTiBFeFnl3oCXyby_54bxODlDTBIjbswqP6SdYBdTkpCIqDS2Tbn8Z3E9OqJB-bnrAS7E/s1600/squanto+snack.jpg" /></a></div>
I just made a recipe for students to follow and a how to writing paper.

I also have a great unit about the Pilgrims and Wampanoag that is very rigorous. Students read a text (included) that compares and contrasts Pilgrims and the Wampanoag and then answer text dependent questions. After they compare and contrast the two groups, they write an opinion piece in which they choose if they would have rather been a Pilgrim or Wampanoag child in the 1600's and why based on evidence from the text. Click to check it out on TPT!<br />

I have an awesome freebie for you today! I wrote a short Reader's Theater about story elements. This really helps my students with the vocabulary of story elements and serves as an anchor all year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I seriously can ask my students in May, "class, what's a solution?" and everyone answers "how they fix the problem!" with some hammering to follow. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9MBso7d7m12V1RVYUQyb2ROeFE/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Click here </a>to download the file from Google Drive.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This week,we will be working on diving deeper into the Story Elements to "describe" the characters, setting, problem and solution.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Check back soon (or follow me!) for a great close reading lesson that focuses on describing characters! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Meanwhile, enjoy this short video of my kiddos performing their reader's theater. This performance was in our classroom 5 min before the bell on Friday; so, it's a little rougher than the performances we took on the road earlier that day. :)</div>

<div>
I am really not good at balancing teaching, a family and blogging but I have the best intentions... Really, I do!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This past month has been great with my new superstars! I wanted to share a few of the highlights in case you just started this past week.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's my son and I on the 1st day.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIz-7qwKtPk44bkBOZpND3niiAe4sVpdB4ndePbfCo6JOUnbFfkXgoeGrvbP4YeqR8p6hQHNW4qgUwMuie1Y2EuUe0ZAMv7pnMuo6sWHlYIRtj0_qqfg1QISQtJ2hipEfnLzTazL3rhJRp/s640/blogger-image--2081792167.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIz-7qwKtPk44bkBOZpND3niiAe4sVpdB4ndePbfCo6JOUnbFfkXgoeGrvbP4YeqR8p6hQHNW4qgUwMuie1Y2EuUe0ZAMv7pnMuo6sWHlYIRtj0_qqfg1QISQtJ2hipEfnLzTazL3rhJRp/s640/blogger-image--2081792167.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We started the school year by celebrating our uniqueness! We sang a super cute poem and drew a self portrait:</div>
<div>
(Tune of Frere Jacques) </div>
<div>
" I am special!</div>
<div>
I am special!</div>
<div>
Yes, I am!</div>
<div>
Yes, I am!</div>
<div>
There is no one like me.</div>
<div>
There is no one like me.</div>
<div>
I am unique!</div>
<div>
I am unique!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We read the Colors of Us and talked about skin color uniqueness. Then we mixed paints to find our skin color and paint our "faces". </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU6FlPvV_5UFkts0h6-BKyBxWlgXuY7vGjLZ7REskSoYT22Zu93gtW8kEOpTxsYHTBb8gOCsj7rsAZ70EKloGYVY28LV9KopzoIdmnJwTqUd8krQ-Y4RDCpOBWrXdxKCASpS6anPQjbWZ_/s640/blogger-image-992437826.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU6FlPvV_5UFkts0h6-BKyBxWlgXuY7vGjLZ7REskSoYT22Zu93gtW8kEOpTxsYHTBb8gOCsj7rsAZ70EKloGYVY28LV9KopzoIdmnJwTqUd8krQ-Y4RDCpOBWrXdxKCASpS6anPQjbWZ_/s640/blogger-image-992437826.jpg" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
We also completed an awesome activity from Stephanie's Back to School Bash unit. First, we read a book called Everyone is Smart ( it's included in the unit!) and then thought about how we are all smart in different ways ( multiple intelligences). The students then wrote their names on post-it notes and chose the ways in which they are smart. </div>
<div>

I have one more day before the kiddos get here! Not sure I'm completely ready yet but slowly getting there. I am holding steady at 29 kids and hoping I don't get any more. Pray for me, will you?<br />
<br />
I wanted to share a few resources today I found to help me with guided math. My personal goal this school year is to improve my small group math instruction. I began researching and found some good assessments.<br />
<br />
The first is an individual assessment from the Math Learning Center. It has prompts and activities to help you assess number sense, base ten, composing/decomposing numbers, and addition and subtraction. It seems to be clear enough that a helper could administer the assessments.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://bridges1.mathlearningcenter.org/files/media/Bridges_GrK-5_Assmnt/GR1-YearlongAssessment-0512w.pdf" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWpXyqTsxeQunoPq5ka_F2oHZ-7s4VAOutNdsg7oEtNY4xVhjGH4k_X32OFtKmiq_Z4xbSGZeZyBfg9Z9ALd9R_lRxuD9usIBbI99d6P0qn0Q39ueb1jebX28G5zBBd877e0XIYgxCzI64/s1600/math+assessment.PNG" height="281" width="320" /></a></div>
The next resource I found is awesome! <a href="http://educationnorthwest.org/content/2252" target="_blank">Education Northwest</a> has an assessment for each Common Core math standard. The assessments could be given as pre-tests or used as ready-to-go mini lessons for your guided groups. I printed them all off and made a binder so I could have all the assessments/ mini lessons quickly at hand.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgorQ0MQPPtkwq4kMikCOEN9IFh4SCxSeBtahdrTLaguD7-COsGdMs7FE9G452wv-0cE_HeQPSDNQs-0OsjgDVyK5R2XhhjnKHao3-9chmteHOFa8LBl97oDQ7RIl06iwgaxCEym0BHxPA5/s1600/Capture.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgorQ0MQPPtkwq4kMikCOEN9IFh4SCxSeBtahdrTLaguD7-COsGdMs7FE9G452wv-0cE_HeQPSDNQs-0OsjgDVyK5R2XhhjnKHao3-9chmteHOFa8LBl97oDQ7RIl06iwgaxCEym0BHxPA5/s1600/Capture.PNG" height="320" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
When you go to the website, log-in for free to access their kinder and 1st grade resources. Here are two examples of the assessments:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGnqqWZ8XLzM1c_2oXfxzh-wv4Szy9U-WqAVEgAjTvCxOvmOaYI7b_nuX_mYwZrd_stCM5e8lFE24COI6ztOVBSSG64nkDFk1rV0GEgKvVcaCOAbFi3WrLBJm5HalEzrvAogCI5Qlm9qIK/s1600/Capture1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGnqqWZ8XLzM1c_2oXfxzh-wv4Szy9U-WqAVEgAjTvCxOvmOaYI7b_nuX_mYwZrd_stCM5e8lFE24COI6ztOVBSSG64nkDFk1rV0GEgKvVcaCOAbFi3WrLBJm5HalEzrvAogCI5Qlm9qIK/s1600/Capture1.PNG" height="155" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUifXBaydBUPgz2aTCNEyGKT2igMIyQ98ggFpZQOuTxNImyZZy-S9mVZUi7sNINnlZEFBOlqg-EbWztJmccPWg3OW3xvhn9D3nF6J_sAO2P7OUtJ-hwwqfAscohuYRI2Wo-jd8fNR8eZtV/s1600/Capture2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUifXBaydBUPgz2aTCNEyGKT2igMIyQ98ggFpZQOuTxNImyZZy-S9mVZUi7sNINnlZEFBOlqg-EbWztJmccPWg3OW3xvhn9D3nF6J_sAO2P7OUtJ-hwwqfAscohuYRI2Wo-jd8fNR8eZtV/s1600/Capture2.PNG" height="158" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
The last resource I want to share is a checklist I made to record my teacher observations during guided math groups. This checklist is different from other Common Core math checklists because I task analyzed each standard or skills students need prior to mastering the end of year goals as well as included levels of mastery for each standard. For example, the student can solve join word problems with manipulatives, counting on or using a known fact. This will help me know to what degree the students have mastered each math standard. Here are a few examples of the pages. It's actually 11 pages in all. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/1st-Grade-Common-Core-Math-Checklist-811818" target="_blank">Click here to download</a>.<br />

I tend to like math centers that aren't extremely thematic so I can use them when I want. I needed some math centers for the fall that would build number sense as well as addition and subtraction concepts. I also wanted a few centers that would spiral the measurement and data domain. I set out to create a few and wound up with ten!!!! Whew! Took forever!<br />

I wanted to share some freebies and ideas with you in case you teach about Bears during the year.<br />
<br />
Last year, my teammate and I started the new year off with a bear theme. It was so fun! I posted a lot of freebies (click the pics) I had created and this year I made so much more because I wanted the unit to align more with the Common Core shifts. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B9MBso7d7m12OEpiYjU4S0p1a1E" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5_-9nMPFPH7wtRicAN9E7e8Mx3b4YbyHnHzi6HtCzTcKkp1tG1rudMTq_hc1NVZ3S35p98xVssMJJ4BLwSwT_xhrm8174xtY7lN1jCI_ZbDWXB-7Ku2o9gJesnZEeZzbHdyumTA_CoZgh/s320/bears.PNG" height="246" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Last year, I posted about a 4 corners activity to get the students discussing opinions. Hang the 4 bear signs in different corners of the room ( included in the freebie). The students will have to decide which bear ( Panda, Polar, Brown or Black) they like the best and discuss the reason for their choice with a partner. The student will then write why they like that type of bear. We will use the sentence frame I like ____________ because. ( Also, free!)<br />
We will then graph these results as well during math.<br />
<br />
However, this year, I added a non-fiction text we can read as a class to build the students' background knowledge about each type of bear. Then I can guide them to justify their opinion using a reason from the text.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bear-y-Common-Core-An-ELA-and-Math-Unit-About-Bears-744468" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2R0NFdDxFZLLklYGJNmFgyjLaLChDm3xGZxeGEhZIrZP9YnvHBRU3cnfoz1K9cY8frrW_IFCwN8aZzKISLDKl4R7zb5v9v3tWpyEHF7YwGzNy6kPTBDd8jNsi6eiZea5Cts3u0kBV53Lj/s779/preview.PNG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I created a graphic organizer for each type of bear so students could work on finding the key details in text about each type of bear. I also added more opinion writing papers so you can differentiate and use this pack at any time during the year.<br />
<br />
Last year I created these math freebies which are still available just click any pic to take you to the Google Docs file.<br />
<br />
1-20 cards to practice one more/one less<br />
(Just copy on Brown construction to use less ink!) <br />
Play Bear Hunt with these cards. Hand out these cards to each student. Call out a clue such as, "Who has one more than 5?". The students with 6 would stand up. You can increase difficulty by asking, "What's two more/two less or 10 more/10 less?".<br />

This year I created so many more math activities! For every activity I created a more advanced game. Instead of just Make 5, I created a Make Ten as well. Rather that just including one more/ one less, I also added 10 more/10 less. I added gummy bear sorting and graphing recording sheets, a Teddy Bear measuring record sheet and a building teen number equations game.<br />

I don't know about you, but over the summer I constantly think about improving classroom management. More specifically, my behavior plan. How can I make this year run more smoothly? How can I make sure to balance positive and negative consequences? How can I ensure everyone has a chance to be successful?<br />
Last year, I came up with a behavior plan that I call "5 Star Day".<br />
<br />
Here is a freebie of the rules I made. I use Whole Brain Teaching ( search on YouTube). Feel free to edit if you want because I changed the last rule to "Keep everyone happy" because this includes me as well! Click on pic to download!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I used "5 Star Day" last year to keep students motivated to follow the rules and they seemed to really enjoy it. This was developed to also help lessen my load during pack-up time... See I always stamped the calendar of students who had a "good" day and then wrote on the calendars of those who broke rules. It took me forever and then the students just started talking and goofing around rather than stand by their desk as they were supposed to do when they are done packing up. I tried to have a student stamp while I wrote but the wrong day would get stamped or a student who shouldn't have received a stamp did and I felt like it was making me look unorganized to parents.<br />
<br />
This new system held students accountable, helped me with recording problem behavior, saved time at the end of the day and made those wonderful, rule-followers shine!<br />
<br />
I added this star behavior calendar to our STAR take home folders.<br />

<br />
I love this because students can color in the number of stars they earn at the end of the day to save me time. I just check on the ones " who struggle" with behavior and write the rule(s) they need to work on. This helps students have a goal for each day. It also helps me distinguish those with great behavior from those with good behavior rather than just focusing on those with poor behavior.<br />
<br />
Here's how it works:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE4OfQSOyOrgWlvtj1U9-nove5nv6nyd81mq0aqNJC2YjzR8qVRxR1BgaEiXYraaBYZo1UcfpIzJEEVpcYc9nuHScKaf2KDxSjse9_GfQDWFUmuP55WJaFllgk9psRmQG2kBznWWRePZI8/s1600/star+chart.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE4OfQSOyOrgWlvtj1U9-nove5nv6nyd81mq0aqNJC2YjzR8qVRxR1BgaEiXYraaBYZo1UcfpIzJEEVpcYc9nuHScKaf2KDxSjse9_GfQDWFUmuP55WJaFllgk9psRmQG2kBznWWRePZI8/s320/star+chart.PNG" height="52" width="320" /></a><br />

Their goal is 5 stars a day. The students keep track of their own behavior throughout the day with a paperclip on the star chart. At Walmart, I bought their flat plastic paper clips since clothespins are too large to fit under the chart on the desk.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I just added a whole group clothespin chart if you want to do that instead.<br />

<br />
If a student needs an individual consequence, I will quietly motion or whisper that they need to move to 4 stars on their chart. I also write the rule number he or she broke on my class clipboard recording sheet by his or her name. This method also helps me with behavior documentation. Saves so much time!!! I then have students color in the number of stars they earned at the end of the day. This saves me time as I used to stamp everyone’s folder at the end of the day. Now I just check those students who had less than a 5 star day and write which rule they struggled with. I really like this because I can reward those with great behavior at the end of each week or month and keep track of those struggling! I also like that the behavior recording chart is not posted for everyone to see, it is portable and permanent. Parents like that they know exactly how their child is behaving every day.<br />

I made the 5 star behavior calendars for each month with 2 or 3 different options to fit any school calendar as well as included blank templates in case other teachers' rules are different than mine. I tried to think of every possibility! There are 51 pages! If you like this idea and want to try it next year, check it out <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/5-Star-Classroom-Management-System-254444" target="_blank">(here)</a> on TPT for $3.00!!!. I'd love some feedback if anyone downloads. :)<br />

Hi friends!<br />
<br />
I have been gone for so long! I haven't even been able to read posts lately. I have been in gifted cluster trainings and working at my district office on our 1st grade Common Core ELA curriculum. I came back to the blogging world to find out that Google Friend Connect will be no more. Waaa! So, I have set up an account at Bloglovin'. I would appreciate it if my small number of followers would continue to follow me. :)<br />
I have lots of ideas to share for this next year for Common Core and a Differentiated Classroom!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/5190497/?claim=f7q4gec6hq6">Follow my blog with Bloglovin</a><br />
<br />
Now I want to share a new product I just finished. I have had a couple of these spelling tic-tac-toes as freebies for awhile now and they were pretty popular. I decided to spruce them up and make one for each month of the year. They even increase in difficulty as the year progresses. Click the pic or <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Spelling-Tic-Tac-Toe-All-Year-737319" target="_blank">here </a>to view on TPT.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Kids and parents love these because they have choice in activities and I love them because I don't have to think of new activities for spelling each week! :) I also included 3 different non-thematic versions for the beginning, middle and end of year in case there are students who can't celebrate certain holidays.<br />
<br />
Here are a few up close so you can see the variety of activities:<br />

Between a student teacher, Career Ladders ( a hoop-jumping portfolio that is evaluated by other teachers every year) and life, I haven't had the time. I'm sure you've felt that way before, am I right?<br />
<br />
<a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519lHx-UOzL._SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dp,TopRight,12,-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Product Details" border="0" height="200" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519lHx-UOzL._SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dp,TopRight,12,-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_.jpg" width="200" /></a> I did want to stop in quickly today to share an amazing, inspiring book I just read about developing life long readers. The Book Whisperer examines current reading instruction in public schools and challenges teachers to redefine their beliefs about teaching reading. Although the author is a 6th grade teacher, the book will touch a reading teacher of any grade. I highly recommend buying or borrowing this book. I just completed a book study with some teachers at my school and we all absolutely loved it! It's such an easy read but will offer many thought provoking alternatives to traditional reading instruction that will engage and inspire your own students.<br />
<br />
Check it out on Amazon <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Book-Whisperer-Awakening-Reader/dp/0470372273/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367254644&sr=8-1&keywords=the+book+whisperer" target="_blank">here</a>! Let me know if you have read it or have been inspired to read it.<br />
<br />
Happy reading and teaching!<br />
